What drives the number
- Facility fees — the room, staff, and equipment. Hospital charges dwarf birth-center charges.
- Anesthesia / epidural — billed separately at many hospitals; can add hundreds to over a thousand dollars.
- Length of stay — hospitals bill per night, and C-sections typically mean more nights.
- NICU — if the baby needs neonatal intensive care, costs can rise far above these ranges.
