Don't leave money behind
- Stock up smart: contact lenses, sunscreen (SPF 15+), first-aid supplies, and OTC meds are all eligible — buy what you'll actually use.
- Book the appointments: eye exams, dental cleanings, and physicals you've been postponing count, as long as the visit happens before your deadline.
- Glasses are the classic: a second pair or prescription sunglasses is one of the easiest ways to use a few hundred dollars well.
- Keep receipts: your plan administrator can ask for substantiation — save the receipt for everything on this plan.
Timing rules that trip people up
- Expenses must generally be incurred — the service received or item purchased — by your deadline, not merely ordered.
- Your run-out period (time to file claims) is not extra spending time — it's just paperwork time.
- Grace periods and rollovers are employer choices, not guarantees. Confirm yours in writing.
- Eligibility lists change — when in doubt, check your plan's eligible-expense list before buying.
