2026 rule to know: If you do not itemize, eligible cash gifts may still produce a deduction of up to $1,000, or $2,000 on a joint return. Noncash gifts do not qualify for that non-itemizer deduction.
Gifts to individuals are not deductible. Check that the recipient is an eligible organization.
Keep a bank record or written communication for cash gifts. Contributions of $250 or more need a written acknowledgment.
Noncash gifts use deductible value, often fair market value. Extra forms or an appraisal can apply to larger amounts.
