How this estimate works

The calculator treats the expense ratio as a reduction in the annual return, then compounds monthly. Annual contributions are split into 12 equal deposits made at the end of each month. “Fee drag” is the difference between the no-fee projection and each fee-adjusted projection; it includes both estimated fees and the growth those dollars no longer earn.

What is not included

  • Taxes, trading costs, loads, or advisory fees
  • Changing returns, contributions, or expense ratios
  • Inflation or market volatility
